“I thank my God, making mention of you always in my prayers, hearing of your love and faith which you have toward the Lord Jesus and toward all the saints, that the sharing of your faith may become effective by the acknowledgment of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus. For we have great joy and consolation in your love, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed by you, brother.” Philemon 1:4-7 NKJ
The basis of Paul’s frequent mentioning of Philemon in prayer, and thanking GOD for him, was his love for GOD’S people and his faith in the LORD. This is something that Paul heard about him from others. Philemon was one who let his light shine to the glory of GOD. Think of a brother or sister in Christ that you know, who anytime you hear their name, a smile comes to your face. You say things such as, “Brother or Sister so and so really encourages me.” “They are very benevolent.” “They are truly kind.” “They have a good attitude.” “They have moral conviction.” “It is evident that they really love GOD.” Philemon was of this sort. The word love attached to Philemon is the word agape and it refers to affection or benevolence. Philemon followed the compassionate example that Jesus set. He did not merely identify needs, but likewise responded. Paul’s prayer was that Philemon would continue to shine this light in the Kingdom, and himself grow in the fellowship of the Gospel. This was not just sharing the Gospel message in word, but likewise in deed. Philemon was valuable to the Kingdom work. The light He was shining was a result of him being in Christ. As a result of his actions, the hearts of many saints experienced refreshing. The first century was a challenging time for Christians, but the benevolent heart of Philemon was the revival many Christians needed. The Philemon effect was a result of the effect that Jesus had on Him. One in Christ has the potential to refresh the hearts of many. Be a refresher, be like Philemon, be like Jesus.
