“And all the days of Enoch were three hundred sixty and five years…” Genesis 5:23
Enoch lived a relatively short life in comparison to others of his day. For instance, his father, Jared, lived to be 962. The smallest number of years recorded after Enoch’s 365 in Genesis 5, is Lamech’s 777 years. 365 is a long time until you compare it to 777. Yet, Lamech’s 777, falls 192 years short of Methuselah’s 969 years. While the life span for our generation is significantly shorter, nothing has changed regarding age discrepancy and death. Young and old expire for many different reasons at expected and unexpected times. Although most desire to live as long as possible and keep their loved ones as long as they can, in the scheme of eternity, it’s not the longevity of years that matter. What counts most is what we do with our allotted time. Enoch’s story is unique in that he was “…translated that he should not see death…” Hebrews 11:5. Even so, his time on earth was less than half the duration of the 2nd youngest cited in Genesis 5, Lamech. Nevertheless, Enoch spent his time in a way that yielded a very profitable return. Enoch “…walked with God…” Genesis 5:22. The Hebrew writer states,“…by faith, Enoch was translated…” Before his translation, the testimony regarding Enoch was, “…he pleased God.” Hebrews 11:5
When my time here is finished and I close my eyes in death, it will be said, all the days of Jay were X number of years. Yet, what matters most is, how, and with what, I filled the days that made up the summation of those years. Did I walk with GOD? What better way could one fill their days? Will it be said of me, “By faith???” Will it be said, “…he pleased GOD???”
