Consult, Wait, Praise and Thank GOD First

In Daniel 2, the King of Babylon had a troubling dream about the future and desired to know its meaning. He called for the magicians, astrologers, sorcerers, and Chaldean wise men of the land for the answer. While ready and willing to give the king an interpretation, they were not ready, nor had the ability to fulfill the king’s request to first tell him the content of the dream. King Nebuchadnezzar wanted the truth and knew that divine revelation was necessary. If one could receive divine revelation to interpret the dream, then receiving the same divine help in having the dream itself revealed, should not be an issue. The Chaldean wise men acknowledge to do what the king had asked was beyond the ability of fleshly man.

“There is not a man on earth who can tell the king’s matter; therefore, no king, lord, or ruler has ever asked such things of any magician, astrologer, or Chaldean. It is a difficult thing that the king requests, and there is no other who can tell it to the king except the gods, whose dwelling is not with flesh.” Daniel 2:10-11

After hearing their admission of inability to fulfill his request, Nebuchadnezzar ordered that all wise men in the land be executed. Included were Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. After learning the backstory as to why this execution was ordered, Daniel asked the king for time that he might reveal the dream’s meaning. Daniel 2:16

After being granted this time, Daniel returned to tell his companions of the king’s decree, that they too might seek mercy from the God of heaven concerning this secret. Daniel 2:17-18

After receiving word from the LORD in a night vision, Daniel does not immediately rush off to tell the king, but rather takes time to praise GOD, acknowledge His Sovereign power, and offer a prayer of thanksgiving for the revelation he received.

“Blessed be the name of God forever and ever, for wisdom and might are His and He changes the times and the seasons; He removes kings and raises up kings; He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding. He reveals deep and secret things; He knows what is in the darkness, and light dwells with Him. “I thank You and praise You, O God of my fathers; You have given me wisdom and might and have now made known to me what we asked of You, for You have made known to us the king’s demand.” Daniel 2:20-23

When situations are stressful, it’s very easy to respond recklessly by getting out in front of the LORD. Daniel and his companions found themselves in a life-threatening situation yet responded by patiently trusting in the LORD.

Daniel knew that it was not his place to answer when GOD had not spoken. Even though his life was in danger, rather than responding hastily, he asked for time to consult His GOD and waited upon the LORD.  Daniel 2:16-19

After receiving word from the LORD, Daniel stops to glorify Him, acknowledging that there is no GOD like Jehovah and offers a prayer of thanksgiving. Daniel 2:20-23

When faced with a time sensitive, life-threatening trial, Daniel consulted GOD, waited on GOD, praised GOD, and thanked GOD before seeking to remedy the challenge before him.
