When Jesus made his earthly appearance, there was a lot of excitement. In Luke 2:10-11, an angel of GOD, a messenger appeared to some shepherds with a message. “Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord.”
That was good news and some, including these shepherds were excited about this news and understood why.
When Mary and Joseph took Jesus to the temple to obey what was required of them by the Law. Simeon, who was waiting for the consolation of Israel, “…took Jesus up in his arms, and blessed God, and said, Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word, for mine eyes have seen thy salvation, which thou hast prepared before the face of all people; a light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.” Luke 2:28-32
Anna, a prophetess who “…served God with fastings and prayers night and day…. she, coming in, that instant gave thanks likewise unto the Lord, and spake of him to all of them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem.” Luke 2:37-38
There were others who heard the Gospel of Jesus proclaimed and knew that it was good news, but many, hearing, did not view it this way. There were multiple reasons, many did not believe Jesus was the Messiah. Many did not want Jesus to be the Messiah. Others wanted to hold on to their Jewish roots. Those of the sect of the Pharisees loved their tradition more than what the scriptures said, regarding the coming Messiah, therefore they rejected Jesus.
In doing so they rejected their Savior, who later died to redeem them. Jesus also died to redeem you and me. That is good news because we could not pay the debt we owed. Nevertheless, we may choose to reject our Savior. We may choose to hold on to our debt of sin, however, when it comes time to pay, we will be disappointed to find out that, we have nothing with which to repay. Luke 7:36-50
Jesus coming to this earth and paying a debt that I could not afford is good news, but only if am willing to surrender the balance due to Him.
