Daniel, GOD’S faithful servant, had survived Babylonian captivity and gained favor with King Darius. Daniel, and two others were assigned an administrative role. Their special work was to oversee the one-hundred and twenty princes placed over the various provinces throughout the kingdom, to ensure that the king suffered no loss financially.
“…Daniel distinguished himself above the governors and satraps because an excellent spirit was in him; and the king gave thought to setting him over the whole realm. Daniel 6:3
Daniel exceled above all others in similar positions because he possessed an excellent spirit. The way which Daniel performed his duties, was to such a high level, he was considered preeminent in his thinking. Surveying Daniel’s life, he would have taken no credit for his distinguished performance but would have given GOD the glory for any success that he had. Daniel again found himself in line for a promotion, one that seems to have only been second to the king.
Daniel’s fellow governors conspired with the subordinate princes to derail his potential promotion.
(OKJ) “Then the presidents and princes sought to find occasion against Daniel concerning the kingdom…”
To find an occasion, does not mean they waited for an opportunity to coincidently present itself, but rather an occasion was fabricated, arising falsely. In other words, a reason is given to justify an action that you take, but the reason given is not the real reason. Looking to condemn Daniel in a kingdom matter, was not because they were passionate about kingdom law being kept. They wanted to use that as their reason to justify having Daniel removed, even though their desire for adherence to kingdom law was not the real reason. It was not about what it was about. This same method of pretext was used with Jesus multiple times. (Luke 20:20-23, John 8:3-5)
Regarding Daniel, no fault could be found. He was faithful. Nothing improper or corrupt could be charged against him. With his position, bribery from the princes to look the other way regarding taxes could have been an area investigated. Perhaps a scheme to entrap him was devised. Regardless of what attempts were made, they failed. No unlawful conduct could be found.
Accepting that Daniel was a citizen of stellar character in the kingdom, they concede that no guilty charge against Daniel would be a reality, unless it involved a scenario that required him to choose between obeying kingdom law or the law of his God. This was a tremendous compliment to Daniel’s faithfulness. Consider a faith so strong and so well-known, that it was considered the only surefire way to get you to respond a certain way, because your obedience to GOD was accepted as, the inevitable response. We all should seek to possess a reputation of faithfulness to this degree.
What degree of faithfulness do I possess?
