Do not be quick to commit, consider the consequences first!

After the decree that prohibited anyone from praying to any god or human except Darius was signed, those who conspired against Daniel, assembled with excitement to watch as he returned to his home. (Daniel 6:10-11) As expected, they found him in front of the window that faced Jerusalem, kneeling in prayer. Immediately, they approached the king, reminding him of the decree he signed and getting confirmation that he understood the unalterable nature of it. Afterward, they informed the king, that Daniel had been caught praying to his GOD three times; showing no regard for the Persian king or the decree that he had signed. (Daniel 6:12-13) Daniel was not identified as a fellow governor or administrator, but as “…one of the captive Jews…” Similar to his bond with Nebuchadnezzar, Daniel had grown close to Darius. He appears to have been more than a worker; he had become his friend. Darius was upset with himself and set his heart on trying to deliver Daniel from this fate. (Daniel 6:14)

Have you ever made a hasty decision that put someone you cared for in potential danger, or worse, hurt them, and there was nothing you could do to alter the outcome?

“Do you see a man hasty in his words? There is more hope for a fool than for him.” Proverbs 29:20

Darius labored until sunset searching for a way out, but one did not exist. The king sadly conceded and delivered Daniel to the den of lions. Even though Daniel is ultimately delivered from the fate of the lion’s den, things could have gone drastically different. The king spent a sleepless night in his palace with no food or music to comfort him, agonizing over his hasty words. Do not be quick to commit, stop, and consider the consequences, not only for yourself, but for those you care about.
