In Jeremiah 37:17, King Zedekiah asked the prophet Jeremiah “Is there any word from the Lord?” Out of context it appears that Zedekiah understood, appreciated, and respected the word of the LORD. However, in context, while he may have understood that the word of the LORD was truth, he had a tough time accepting and obeying it. The Chaldeans had surrounded the city of Jerusalem but left for fear of Pharoah and the Egyptians. Jeremiah left for the land of Benjamin to claim his property, however, was accused of defecting to the Chaldeans. Although he passionately denied the accusation, he was thrown into prison. After many days, Jeremiah was brought to the king, per the king’s request and asked, “Is there any word from the LORD?” The King had heard instructions and multiple warnings from Jeremiah many times, however, was a bad listener, in that he failed to obey.
In our text, Jeremiah the prophet answered the King, “Yes, there is a message from GOD, you shall be delivered into the hand of the King of Babylon.” Certainly not the message Zedekiah wanted to hear, nor the message that Jeremiah particularly wanted to share. Inevitable captivity is not a pleasant message. Nevertheless, presenting an alternate message would not change the truth. This was GOD’S truth. There were other prophets who told Zedekiah what he wanted to hear, falsely prophesying that the King of Babylon would not come and take away his land. Although this message was much easier to hear, it did not make it true. Are we willing to accept the truth regardless of the consequences? Whether we are willing to or not, the truth remains the truth.
Is there any word from the LORD?
Yes, and it is ALWAYS TRUTH!
