In Galatians 2:1-10, Paul defended the Gospel he preached and the genuineness of his apostleship. It was verified that he preached the same message as Peter, James and John and the right hand of fellowship was extended to Paul and Barnabas. They were considered partners in sharing the Gospel. In addition to sharing the Good News that there was liberty in Christ, Peter, James and John expressed their desire that Paul and Barnabas, remember the poor. Remembering the poor was an eager undertaking of Paul. The words “we should remember…” in Greek is mnēmoneuōmen. A.T. Robertson, a Greek New Testament scholar, tells us, the English words, “we should remember” is a present active subjunctive, which is a verb form that refers to future actions or situations. Being used this way, the thought behind, “we should remember…” is, that we should keep on remembering. Remembering the poor is not merely calling to mind one’s state of poverty but necessitates action. This action is not a one-time event, but rather an ongoing one.
