Andrew is probably best known in scripture as Simon Peter’s brother. He was a disciple of John the Baptist, and he was a good student. The dominating trait seen in Andrew is his ability to bring others to Jesus. John the Baptist was the prophesied forerunner of the Messiah. He came to prepare the way for the Christ, and he humbly accepted that work. When John the Baptist was questioned as to who he was in John 1:20-23, he quickly affirmed that he was not the Christ but the voice of one crying in the wilderness making straight the way of the Lord, just as the prophet Isaiah had foretold. When John the Baptist saw Jesus in John 1:29-30, he said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who ranks before me, because he was before me.”
“The next day again John was standing with two of his disciples and he looked at Jesus as he walked by and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God!” The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus.” John 1:35-37
One of the two disciples mentioned was Andrew. Andrew and the other disciple go to the place where Jesus was staying after being invited to “come and see”. Andrew followed the footsteps of his former teacher, John the forerunner of Christ. Andrew “…first found his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” and brought him to Jesus. John 1:41-42
Not only did he follow John’s example of bringing others to Jesus, but he also possessed humility. John the Baptist was a bold man in many regards, but he was not a man of pride. When Andrew left him to follow Jesus, John did not try to stop them. John pointed out the Lamb of GOD for them to follow. John was about following GOD’S will and we see this trait in Andrew as well. Those who were jealous of Jesus in John 3:25-30, were committed to John the man, but not the truth of the message he was preaching. Andrew on the other hand was committed to the message of John, when John pointed to Jesus, Andrew followed Jesus. John did not feel betrayed but rather excited that Andrew followed. Like the Forerunner of Christ, Andrew continued to point others in the direction of the Lamb of GOD. If we have found the Messiah in our lives, we have found the source of salvation, are we sharing Jesus with others?
