Spiritual Healing and Faith Luke 6:17-19

After appointing the 12, Jesus came down and stood on a level place preparing Himself to teach. This may or may not be a separate account from the Sermon on the Mount recorded in Matthew 5-7. The content is similar; however, Matthew 5 says that Jesus went up into the Mount, Luke says He came down and stood on a level place. Luke says that he stood, and Matthew says that He sit. It is common for the Gospel writers to give different accounts of the same event. But there certainly would be nothing wrong with Jesus presenting this sermon a 2nd time either. In fact, he may have presented it many times that we do not have recorded. The important part is the content of the message.

Jesus and the 12 were joined by a great multitude from all Judea, Jerusalem, and the seacoast of Tyre and Sidon. Tyre and Sidon were known regions of Phoenicia that served pagan gods. Yet the power of Jesus was impacting all people of all nations. People came from great distances to have an audience with Jesus because they believed in His power. Although Jesus had been up all-night praying, it did not stop Him from preaching to this multitude. Thousands of people believed in the power of Jesus. “Their faith was so great, that all the crowd sought to touch him…” (Luke 6:19) They felt so strongly about the power of Jesus, that much like the woman of (Matthew 9) they were just seeking to touch Him. Consider a power so strong that a simple touch of the source would cure you. Because of their belief, “…power went out from Him and healed them all.” (Luke 6:19) The miracles of Jesus served a purpose. John tells us that they were preserved to produce belief and by believing one could have life through His name. (John 20:31) Throughout the book of Acts the Apostles were given the ability to perform miraculous signs to confirm the word they were speaking. (Mark 16:20)

The same source of power that provided physical healing, provides a much greater healing spiritually. Healing of the spiritual disease sin was always the chief objective. We too can be assured of being healed (forgiven of sin) when we come to Jesus for salvation with an obedient faith.
