“You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men.” Matthew 5:13
Salt, essential for both seasoning and preserving food, is also vital for our health. Our bodies need a specific amount of salt. Researching salt from a spiritual perspective reveals its significant role in the commands of God. Under the Law of Moses, salt was a necessary element for certain offerings. (Leviticus 2:13) (Ezekiel 43:22-24) Salt was also used symbolically concerning covenants. (Numbers 18:19) (2nd Chronicles 13:5)
Jesus uses the benefits and essentiality of salt to teach His followers about their responsibility to season and preserve the earth. The influence on earth is carnal and spiritually bland; it lacks flavor and character. (1st John 2:15-17 Ephesians 2:2; Colossians 3:1-2) Children of God are to represent the flavor God wants to permeate the earth.
Disciples of Christ have a purpose. Salt keeps things from ruining; we may say it stops the spread of corruption. Additionally, it flavors food. Food may be very bland without salt, but salt provides satisfaction.
Spiritually a disciple who is pure salt has the ability to preserve holiness, stop the spread of corruption, and set an example to a bland world of what they may do to find satisfaction.
Every time that we read the Word of God or tell someone about the story of Christ we are seasoning and preserving an earth that is otherwise bland. When we make a stand against immorality we are flavoring and conserving an earth that is otherwise tasteless. But if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned?
Do we ever stop being salt?
Can we lose our ability to flavor, season and preserve this world?
If we become salt that has lost its abilities, how can we fulfill our duty. Salt that has lost its capacity to season and preserve is still salt but what use is it? Jesus says, “…it is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men.”
It never stopped being salt but ceased to fulfill its purpose. We never stop being GOD’S child, but we can stop being a productive and diligent member of the family. In which case we render ourselves good for nothing spiritually. We have a responsibility to provide spiritual flavor and preservation to a carnal and wicked world.
