Miraculous Healing: Revealing Jesus’ Authority to Forgive Sins | Matthew 9:2-10

While in Capernaum, Jesus encountered a paralytic who was lowered through a roof of the house He was in. Rather than initially healing this man physically, our LORD said, “Son, be of good cheer; your sins are forgiven you.” (Matthew 9:2) Many of the Scribes reasoned within their heart that Jesus was guilty of blasphemy. Knowing their thoughts and Jesus asked, “Why do you reason such things in your heart?” “Which is easier to say to the paralytic, your sins are for given or take up your bed and go to your house?”

What was the purpose of the question?

Why did Jesus forgive the sins of the paralytic man 1st?

Anyone could say, “Thy sins are forgiven…” or “Take up your bed and go to your house…” Yet, neither one could be verified as having any authority without some kind of evidence.

Those in the crowd could not literally see with the naked eye any evidence that this man’s sins were forgiven. To the scribes these were just empty words, blasphemous words. Who does Jesus think He is? Only GOD can forgive sins.

While they could not see this man’s sins being forgiven, there was something they could witness that would bear witness to the fact that Jesus did indeed have the power to forgive sins thus testifying to His deity.

“But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins”—then He said to the paralytic, “Arise, take up your bed, and go to your house, and he arose and departed to his house.” Matthew 9:6-7

The purpose of the miracle was not to heal the paralytic just that he may be healed, but rather, providing evidence of the deity of Jesus. This healing proved that Jesus had the authority to forgive sins.

The authority to forgive sins belonged to GOD and Him alone, therefore, what conclusion could one draw about Jesus from this miracle? He is the Son of GOD.

The paralytic man who moments earlier was seen being lowered down through the roof of the house, was seen walking; carrying the same bed he was just lying on.

“Now when the multitudes saw it, they marveled and glorified God, who had given such power to men.” Matthew 9:8
