The Call to Self-Sacrifice: Following Jesus’ Example

Living a life characterized by self-sacrifice should be the natural response to one motivated by the sacrifice of Jesus.

“If anyone wishes to follow me, he must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.” Matthew 16:24 These acts of self-denial, cross-bearing, and following are not optional. We are called to a life of non-conformity. Romans 12:1-2 teaches us to not conform to the world but be transformed by the renewal of our mind, to discern the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God. Transformation is essential; we must not suggest or imply that continuing in sin is acceptable. Romans 6:3-4, teaches that we arise from baptism to walk a new life. Friendship with the world is hostility towards God. James 4:4

When asked about the greatest commandment, Jesus replied, “YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND.’ This is the first and great commandment and the second is like it: ‘YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.’ On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.”Matthew 22:37-40

Selfishness and self-promotion have no place in the life of a child of GOD. We must live sacrificial lives, for GOD and our neighbor. Luke 10:30-37
