The Power of Self-Sacrifice in Acts 4:32-37

Acts 4:32-37

32 one heart and one soul; …they had all things in common. 34 Nor was there anyone among them who lacked… 35 …they distributed to each as anyone had need.

Self-sacrifice was on display, in Acts 4. For the majority of the Jerusalem church, it seemed as if they did not need to consider their response; they simply acted. Among them was Barnabas, the son of encouragement, who sold his land and presented the profits to the Apostles. Barnabas was not alone, those who owned lands or houses sold them, and did likewise. The apostles then distributed to each according to their need. Not all were land or homeowners, they had needs, and their brethren in Christ sacrificed so that those in want could have their needs met.

The motivation behind this action was love. They were united in Christ and recognized that they were members of one another. If one member suffered, they all suffered, and therefore were committed to doing whatever was necessary to ensure that the suffering member received what they needed. Such behavior naturally promoted unity and affection. Those who benefited would feel great appreciation and respect for those who sacrificed, while the givers would be content knowing they had eased the suffering of their brethren.

A one another attitude eliminates pride, jealousy, and selfishness, consequently promoting humility, joy, contentment and selflessness.

Is there a family, team, relationship or church that will not thrive if they possess an attitude of one another?
