There is a contrast of paths spoken of in Proverbs 2. Paths of justice, paths of uprightness, devious paths, paths of the dead, paths of life, and paths of righteousness. The instruction of the father in Proverbs 2 is intended to help us choose the godly path of justice, uprightness, life and righteousness, while abstaining from the devious and deadly path.
The effort spoken of in Proverbs 2:1-4 regarding wisdom, (receive, treasure, incline, apply, cry out, lift up, seek and search) results in understanding the fear of the Lord and finding the knowledge of GOD. (Proverbs 2:5) This effort and desire does not go unnoticed by the LORD. He responds, and the benefits the come as a result, follows. You will understand and find, because the LORD gives wisdom and from His mouth come knowledge and understanding. (Proverbs 2:6) He stores up, is a shield, guards, and preserves. This results in understanding righteousness, justice, equity and every good path.
“When wisdom enters your heart and knowledge is pleasant to your soul discretion will preserve you and understanding will keep you…” (Proverbs 2:10-11) The desired destination for wisdom is the heart; when there, we find protection. Wisdom in our heart provides the upkeep and care that it needs. To preserve means to hedge about as with thorns, to guard and protect. When wisdom enters our heart, a hedge of protection is provided by the LORD for our safety. This in turn leads to deliverance from the paths that destroy our lives and most importantly our soul. (Proverbs 2:12-22)
