In Proverbs 3:13-18 the value that godly wisdom offers surpasses anything that this world may. Her profit is better than silver and gold, she is more valuable than rubies and anything that man may desire, cannot compare to her. She offers longevity of life, not necessarily a long life here upon this earth but rather, she offers eternal life. Her ways are described as pleasant and peaceful. She is a tree of life that yields happiness. However, we have a responsibility regarding her. Proverbs 3:13 and 3:18 are bookends of responsibility.
“Happy is the man who FINDS wisdom, And the man who GAINS understanding….”
“She is a tree of life to those who TAKE HOLD of her, And happy are all who RETAIN her.”
Find, gain, take hold and retain.
Find- “reaches,” or “obtains by seeking.”
Gain- “draws out,” as metals by digging.
Lay hold- to fasten upon; to seize, be strong….
Retain- to sustain; to obtain, keep fast; to help, follow close: – (take, up-) hold (up), maintain…
Wisdom is not just something that we get without any effort or desire. She is something to be sought after. We are to dig for her as we would dig for gold. When found, she is to be seized and held on to. We are to take care of her, sustain her, follow her closely and maintain her.
