The Sweet Allure and Bitter Consequences (Proverbs 5)

“For the lips of an immoral woman drip honey and her mouth is smoother than oil…” (Proverbs 5:3) The immoral woman of Proverbs 5 appears very desirable. The thought of fulfilling the lust of the flesh is like an addict craving a drug to achieve the high their body yearns for. Initially, it provides carnal satisfaction, but there is a dark side in which nothing is pleasant or fulfilling.

While one may get the immediate satisfaction of fulfilling a sexual desire, the father wants the son to know in the end “…she is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two-edged sword. Her feet go down to death and her steps lay hold of hell.” That’s quite a contrast from sweet honey and smooth oil; yes, this is what she looks like, but here’s what you get.

GNB “…when it is all over, she leaves you nothing but bitterness and pain. She will take you down to the world of the dead; the road she walks is the road to death.”

The antidote is to allow wisdom to once again take up residence in our heart.

“My son, attend unto my wisdom, and bow thine ear to my understanding that thou mayest regard discretion, and that thy lips may keep knowledge.” (Proverbs 5:1-2)

“Hear me now therefore, O ye children, and depart not from the words of my mouth.” (Proverbs 5:7)

The Father offers this simple yet profound instruction, “Remove thy way far from her and come not nigh to the door of her house…” Proverbs 5:8
