The father’s instruction to his son in the first four verses of Chapter 7 encourages him to be active in developing an intimate relationship wisdom. Keep, treasure, bind, write, say, and call. With the words, keep, treasure, bind and write, the following actions are encouraged. Keep- to build a hedge as with thorns around the heart. Treasure- to hoard up in the heart; to have in reserve. Bind- to tie or gird (use wisdom to remove those things that would hinder.) Write- to engrave (make permanent) Concerning the words call and say, the father encourages communication with wisdom. Call on wisdom when faced with temptation or making a decision. With these proactive words, the father is encouraging the son to develop an intimate relationship with wisdom. Value her as something precious and she will protect and preserve you. We may learn the right course of action, but we must be diligent to not allow ourselves to become disconnected from this wisdom. The expression “apple of your eye” literally means, the little man of the eye, the pupil or ball. (Strongs HG Dictionary) This refers to the miniature reflection of objects seen in the pupil. This phrase is used symbolically for something that is cherished. It is considered precious and is to be protected. This phrase is used regarding GOD’S care, love, and protection for Israel. (Deuteronomy 32:10). When we regard GOD’S law as precious and write it upon the tablet of our heart then doing the right thing becomes something we desire.
The Father’s instruction in this context to his son is to specifically address the issue of sexual immorality. However, this approach with wisdom should be employed across the board as we travel through this life.
