Discovering Wisdom and the Fear of God (Proverbs 8)

(Proverbs 8:1-4)

A failure to obtain wisdom is a failure of the individual. Wisdom wants to be seen; she wants to be heard and therefore makes herself accessible. (V1) She cries out and lifts up her voice. She does not do so in a dark corner or back alley, rather, (V2) she stands on top of the high hill, and at the intersection where the crowd is. (V3) she cries out by the gates at the entrance of the city doors.

The visibility and accessibility of wisdom has its greatest demonstration in the creation. Proverbs 8:22-32 speak of her role in creation as well as her eternal nature.

The Lord possessed me at the beginning of His way before His works of old.” (Proverbs 8:22)

This word beginning, is again the Hebrew word ray-sheeth’ that is used in 1:7 where the writer says that “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge…” and in 4:7 “…wisdom is the principle thing…”

By Wisdom GOD created and fashioned this world. The creation is a manifestation of GOD’S Wisdom and something that we should be in awe of. The evidence and availability of wisdom is undeniable, our failure to possess and retain her arises from a lack of fear for the LORD.

In Proverbs 1:22, wisdom says, that “…fools hate knowledge.”

If fearing the LORD is the beginning of knowledge and one hates knowledge, and despises both wisdom and instruction, it is evident that there is no fear of GOD. If we are not in awe of GOD, how likely are we to hear the cries of wisdom?
