“Be not envious against evil men, neither desire to be with them. For their heart studies destruction, and their lips talk of mischief.” Proverbs 24:1-2
Often, evil men are powerful men, and power is something to be desired. With power comes the fulfilment of fleshly lust, the accumulation of wealth, popularity, recognition and so on. These things can be tempting. However, the starting point that leads to this power and prospering lies within a wicked heart. He considers how to achieve his desires through theft and oppression. When the writer states he speaks of mischief, it is not merely idle talk; rather, he is expressing the evil intent he has devised in his heart.
The prosperity and fleshly satisfaction that come from evil, come at a price. One chapter earlier in Proverbs 23:17-18, that price is mentioned as a loss of hope.
Do not be jealous of the sinner in your heart, but rather be zealous in revering GOD all day, every day. A life focused on passionately serving the LORD and being zealous in our reverence for Him, is an eternal investment. When we do this, rather than envying evil and being jealous over the sinner, we will be firmly focused on eternity.
Proverbs 23:17 Do not let your heart envy sinners but be zealous for the fear of the Lord all day.
Proverbs 23:18 For surely there is a hereafter, and your hope will not be cut off.
