“Every word of God is pure; He is a shield to those who put their trust in Him. Do not add to His words, Lest He rebuke you, and you be found a liar.” Proverbs 30:5-6
The imagery of precious metals having gone through a refiner’s fire is used to describe the word of GOD.
Bible Hub’s topical encyclopedia says the following regarding the art of refining. “In ancient times, refining was a process used to purify precious metals such as gold and silver. The metal would be heated in a crucible until it melted, allowing impurities to rise to the surface and be removed. This process required skill and patience, as the refiner had to carefully control the temperature to ensure the metal was not damaged.”
GOD’S word is inherently free of impurities. Therefore, anything that we add dilutes the purity of them. As GOD directed, Moses warned Israel, “You shall not add to the word which I command you, nor take from it, that you may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you.” Deuteronomy 4:2
If Israel was to be successful in keeping the commands of GOD, it was necessary that they accept His word in its purity. By adding or subtracting, it would become contaminated, making it something else. It would be impossible for Israel to follow GOD accurately if they watered down His word, because when diluted, it ceased to be His. Those who would add to or subtract from the word, would be exposed in due time and found a liar.
The LORD told Joshua, “…be strong and very courageous, that you may observe to do according to all the law which Moses My servant commanded you; do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may prosper wherever you go.” Joshua 1:7
To turn to the right or left is equivalent to contaminating the purity of GOD’S word. Just as one who adds or subtracts cannot keep the commands of GOD and will be exposed as a liar, neither can they expect to prosper.
But, for those who will trust the LORD, He will be a shield. Trusting the LORD is to trust His word in its purity. Be confident that it is enough and has the power to protect and guide us on our journey. The purity of the word of GOD, will be a hedge to us for defense.
The word for shield (mâgên) is also used to describe the scaly hide of the crocodile. The structure of crocodile hides consists of overlapping scales made of keratin, which provides a natural armor that offers protection against predators. In the spiritual sense, GOD’S Word in its purity offers protection against the predators of darkness and evil that seek to destroy our soul. However, when we contaminate the word of GOD by adding or subtracting, we forfeit this protection and make ourselves vulnerable.
We must ALWAYS trust GOD and keep His word pure in our lives.
