1st John 4:9-11
In the previous verses, John speaks of GOD being the source and core of love. He revealed this love to man by sending the His only begotten Son to the earth to die as a perfect sacrifice for our sins so that we might live. To save someone’s life in general is considered a heroic act. However, Jesus is more that a hero, He is our Savior. The life He offers is not a longer earthly life but life eternal. GOD did not do this because He saw how much man loved Him. Rather, in spite of how repulsive our sin was, GOD loved us anyway and desired to save us. Therefore, He sent His Son to be a propitiation or atonement for our sins. The work of GOD by sending the Son was the act of making amends or restitution for my guilt or wrongdoing. I could not make payment for my sin, so GOD did. Why? Because He loved us. He loved me the unlovable by making the ultimate sacrifice, showing us what true love looks like. If GOD loved us in this way, should this not in turn motivate us to love one another?
