Walking in Light: Christ’s Role as Our Righteous Defender

“…if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world.” 1st John 2:1-2

The things John wrote were in order that his readers not sin. We should strive and be motivated to avoid sin; however, sinless perfection by power of the individual after coming to Christ in order to remain saved is not required, which is good because it is not possible. This does not give one permission to sin but is intended to comfort the Child of GOD who is motivated by the love of GOD, to walk in the light as He is in the light, not by my power but by His.

In Christ, we have “an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous and He Himself is the propitiation for our sins…”

As we attempt to walk in the light as He is in the light, we have help. That should be a great comfort for us. Jesus is an advocate for us. This word advocate is used 5 times in KJV. The other 4 times it is used, it is used by Jesus and is the word comforter, referring to the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit would provide aid to the apostles as they conducted the work assigned to them. John 14:16, 14:26, 15:26, 16:7. He, the Holy Spirit, would help them. Jesus Christ the righteous is a helper for us regarding sin. He is an intercessor pleading for our benefit. Hebrews 7:25-28

Jesus is not a defense attorney who is required to make a case and try to persuade the Father. His advocacy on our behalf is flawless. His role as advocate is characterized by righteousness. He is a righteous defender, and the certainty of His plea is the fact that He Himself is the propitiation for our sins.

The powerful plea of Jesus regarding our sin is atonement has been made. Atonement, reconciliation, and propitiation, means that sin was covered, the conflict that sin caused between man and GOD was resolved. What makes this plea even greater is, the advocate making the plea, is Himself the propitiation; the advocate is also the atonement. He is the one who made amends or restitution for my guilt. Jesus is the way, the only way,

“No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6), Hebrews 10:19-22, Romans 3:21-26
