The Importance of Thankfulness in Relationships

As Moses fled for his life from the face of Pharaoh, his flight led him to Midian where he encountered the seven daughters of the priest of Midian. The priest’s daughters were watering their fathers flock when other shepherds began to drive them away. Moses stepped in, protected them and assisted with their work resulting in them finishing earlier than expected. This caused Jethro, the priest of Midian, to inquire why and how they had returned so soon. His daughters informed him of the help they had received from an Egyptian. They said, “He delivered us out of the hand of the shepherds and also drew water for us and watered the flock.” This man, we know to be Moses. Moses had spent the first 40 years of his life living under Egyptian care (Acts 7:37), and in appearance and speech, Jethro’s daughters identified him as such. Concerning Jethro, note his response, in Exodus 2:20. (ESV) “Why have you left the man? Call him, that he may eat bread.”

Jethro wanted Moses to know how much his giving heart was appreciated by demonstrating a thankful heart. Jethro, as a father, taught his daughters, the importance of gratitude and hospitality. Not to say that his daughters did not say thank you, but Jethro taught his daughters the importance of demonstrating thankfulness by going the extra mile.
