“Put your hand over your mouth…”

Our words can get us into a lot of trouble. Emotion sometimes can drive us in the wrong direction causing us to drift further off course. Proverbs 30:32 says, “If you have been foolish in exalting yourself, or if you have devised evil, put your hand on your mouth.” The phrase “put your hand on your mouth” offers great advice, meaning, to just stop talking. Cover up the exit where the foolishness is proceeding from and stop engaging in disruptive behavior. Perhaps you have heard the phrase, “the more they talked the worst they made it.” When we realize things are not going very well or we catch ourselves self-boasting, the best course of action is to close the gate on your tongue.

(CEV) If you are foolishly bragging or planning something evil, then stop it now! Proverbs 30:32
