Overcoming Temptation: God’s Promise of Support

(KJV)There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.” (1st Corinthians 10:13)

No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. Paul emphasizes that while everyone encounters temptation, the challenges we face are not unique; others face similar situations before us. You are neither the first nor the last.

Scripture assures us, that GOD will not suffer us to be tempted “…above what we are able…”

The word “suffer” means to permit or leave alone. It is comforting to read the verse this way: “There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not leave you alone to be tempted, above that ye are able…”

God is faithful, He knows that without Him, we would fail. Therefore, He will never abandon us in times of temptation. The phrase, “…above that which you are able to bear…” includes all temptations.

We must never think, “I can handle this on my own” nor believe that God ever says, “This one can be managed without Me.”

I love the words in the hymn “I Need Thee Every Hour” by Robert Lowry and Annie S. Hawks (1872) “I need Thee every hour, most gracious Lord… Stay Thou near; temptations lose their power when Thou art here.”

God is faithful and will never leave us alone to face our struggles. Instead, He provides a way of escape so we can endure and overcome.
