The Consequences of Ignoring Your Relationship with God

In the Old Testament book of Hosea as chapter 8 begins, Hosea describes the Assyrians as swooping down like an eagle against the house of Israel. The call to set the trumpet to their mouths signified inevitability—it was not about being ready if it happened but being prepared to sound the alarm when it happened. Why? Because they had gone beyond the boundaries of GOD’s covenant and rebelled against His law.

Notice their claim, Hosea 8:2 “Israel will cry, my GOD we know you!!!!”

What is ironic about their statement?

  • “For she did not know that I gave her corn, and wine, and oil, and multiplied her silver and gold, which they prepared for Baal.” Hosea 2:8
  • “Hear the word of the LORD, ye children of Israel: for the LORD hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land, because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land.” Hosea 4:1
  • “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.” Hosea 4:6
  • “They will not frame their doings to turn unto their God: for the spirit of whoredoms is in the midst of them, and they have not known the LORD.” Hosea 5:4
  • “For I desired mercy and not sacrifice; and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings.” Hosea 6:6

“They have cast off the thing that is good…” Hosea 8:3

Israel had rejected a relationship with GOD and all the blessings that would proceed from that relationship. Israel may have claimed to know GOD, but their actions suggested otherwise. To know GOD is to have a relationship with Him which is evidenced by the life that we live.
