Reigniting Passion Through the Gospel Only

The Gospel is GOD’S power to save (Romans 1:16). This truth should light a fire within us, defining what true success looks like and how it is obtained. However, we sometimes lose sight of this purpose. Our forgetfulness often comes from worldly thinking. One challenge we face when trying to uphold the Gospel with worldly methods is boredom. By this, I mean we feel the need to constantly introduce something new because worldly practices quickly lose their appeal. We are looking for a new activity or a fresh approach to keep things interesting. Jesus fed the 5000 in John 6 and they were satisfied for the moment, yet, when Jesus went to the other side of the sea, the ones He fed followed Him and He replied, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you are seeking me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his seal.” (John 6:26-27)

Temporary things lose their appeal, and when the satisfaction they bring fades, we often seek something new. However, Jesus is enough—He is timeless. The Gospel remains new, fresh, and full of excitement. It never loses its luster unless we stop seeing it for what it truly is: the power of God for salvation.

When the excitement starts to fade, creating an entertainment center will not reignite our passion for the LORD; it will simply entertain us. We may mistake being entertained for zeal, but deep down, we remain a flickering flame that will soon crave something else to fill the void. The only thing that can truly ignite and reignite us is the same thing that sparked our passion in the first place—the Gospel. There are no shortcuts, the GOSPEL is GOD’S power to save and there is never a time that this changes. If we have saving faith, it is because we have responded to the Gospel. When our faith starts to waver, the only thing that can steady us is the Gospel. Believing that something else can restore our zeal for the LORD or that we need to add to the Gospel to rekindle our fire suggests we doubt the power of the Good News about Jesus.
