Are Feelings Enough? The Warning of Matthew 7:21-23

In Matthew 7:21-23, Jesus highlights three significant acts that carry emotional weight and appeal to our feelings, warning that just because many claim to do these things does not mean they are to be followed or that they come from God. When standing before the judgment seat of Christ, many will say, “I have prophesied, cast out demons, and performed many wonders in your name, Jesus.” Jesus says, “I will declare to them I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness or iniquity.”

It is easy to assume the Spirit of God is present in a church assembly when people claim to practice the things Jesus speaks of in Matthew 7:21-22. The atmosphere may give us chills, move people to tears, fill them with excitement, inspire various actions and words of praise. We may say, hallelujah, the Spirit of God is truly moving in this church! But is the Spirit of GOD really moving? There may be another church across town where the same thing is happening, but their message is completely different. So, who is right? Is the Spirit of GOD “moving” in two assemblies that teaching conflicting ways to be saved? The feelings may be intense, but are they manufactured by externals? Is there authorization from the Word of God? If not, can we truly say that the Spirit of God is moving in either assembly?

Can we say, “In your name Jesus”?

Things are not always what they seem; many things that feel good and right may not be from God but rather from Satan.

Paul speaks of false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works. 2nd Corinthians 11:13-15

A supposed angel of light may appear good and feel right. A minister under the guise of righteousness may seem trustworthy, but feelings alone are not a reliable indicator of truth.

There must be a clear standard, not driven by emotions or feelings, but grounded in the word of God. Do not be deceived. Be emotional but make sure it is fruit born from doing the will of GOD and accept that the only way to be sure is when it is backed by the word of GOD.

“If you love me keep my commandments.” John 14:15
