Why the GOD of the Bible as opposed to other supposed deities?
The Creator of Genesis 1 and His authority are self-sustaining. GOD’S existence does not cease or diminish as a result of man’s acceptance or rejection. This, among other things, distinguishes the LORD of the Bible from imaginary deities.
THE GOD of Genesis 1 gives life. The created receive life from the Creator.
The fictional deities of man’s imagination receive life from the fleshly humans who created them.
“So GOD created man in His own image; in the image of GOD He created him, male and female He created them.” Genesis 1:27
“The LORD GOD formed man of the dust of the ground and breathed into His nostrils the breath of life and man became a living being.” Genesis 2:7
“…He giveth to all life, breath, and all things and hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation…” Acts 17:25-26
“For in him we live, and move, and have our being…” Acts 17:28
“…the temple which I build will be great, for our God is greater than all gods. But who can build Him a temple since heaven and the heaven of heavens cannot contain Him? Who am I then, that I should build Him a temple, except to burn sacrifice before Him?” 2nd Chronicles 2:5-6
The Creator spoken of in the preceding passages does not rely on humanity to define who He is. His supreme authority exists independently of the creation’s submission to Him. In contrast, the power of a false god depends entirely on its followers, as it has no authority or strength beyond what humans grant it.
In pronouncing judgement upon the nations that surrounded Judah and Jerusalem the prophet Zephaniah says, “The LORD will be terrible unto them: for He will famish all the gods of the earth; and men shall worship him, everyone from his place, even all the isles of the heathen.” Zephaniah 2:11
The word “famish” refers to someone being reduced to skin and bones. The devotion of their followers gave these fabricated deities relevance and strength. By removing their food, they would starve, being reduced to mere skin and bones, until their legend, and mystique faded away.
Where are the followers of Dagon today? Do people still follow Chemosh, Molech, Bel, and Asherah? These supposed deities mentioned in the Old Testament were famished by Sovereign GOD of Genesis 1. The perversion and principles tied to these deities may appear in new forms, but the belief of the gods themselves have long vanished. If they were true deities, would they not still exist today?
The existence, glory, and nature of the LORD GOD of heaven and earth is not dependent on humanity. This showcases His love even. He does not need us—He WANTS US! Yet, whether or not we accept Him does not diminish His power. Man does not have the ability to starve God.
