What makes “the fruit” appealing?
In the garden, when Eve looked at the tree, she saw it was good for food, pleasant to the eyes, and desirable for gaining wisdom. So, she took its fruit and ate it, then gave some to Adam, who was with her, and he ate too. Genesis 3:6
The fruit offered by certain false teachers will have a similar appeal. It seems purposeful and fulfilling, it looks good, and it’s very attractive, but its purpose, appearance, and appeal are all directed toward the flesh. There is no denying that entertainment undoubtedly draws individuals into the “church” building. But are we appealing to the spirit or the flesh? “For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world.” 1st John 2:16
Throughout the book of Acts, we see men and women target the spirit of man by spreading the Gospel. Peter preached the Gospel, Stephen preached the Gospel, Aquila and Priscilla taught the Gospel, and Paul preached the Gospel; the church was constantly sharing the Gospel. People were added to the church through Gospel preaching. When a church’s appeal is based on extracurricular activities rather than teaching the Gospel, we can be sure that the fruit is coming from the wrong tree.
Jesus teaches that a good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. Good fruit aligns with the Word of God. Matthew 7:16-20
