Truly knowing God means having a relationship with Him. This relationship should produce the fruit of obedience, showing the full effect of His love in the lives, we live. We are motivated to follow Him because of the depths of His love. Loving one another is highlighted in 1st John 4:10-12 as evidence of GOD’S love accomplishing what it is intended to in our relationships. When we are seen loving one another, that is evidence of the love of GOD working in our lives and motivating us.
“By this we know that we abide in Him, and He in us, because He has given us of His Spirit.” 1st John 4:13
We are not given His Spirit beyond our control and forced to be Christ like by obeying and showing love. Rather, we know that we are in Christ and Christ is in us when His spirit is evident in our life. The spirit of Christ is a Spirit of love, because of that love Jesus obeyed the Father’s will. The same may be and should be seen in us. When we show a spirit of love and obedience, we demonstrate the Spirit of Christ and provide evidence of a relationship with God. If GOD forced us to love, then it would not be genuine. In fact it would not be love at all, but an act of compulsion, in which we had no choice. Love and obedience are free choices that reflect a Christlike spirit in us. If we allow ourselves to be motivated by the love of GOD, we will produce fruit in which we choose to love one another.
