Assurance, Expectations and Conditions

“These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God.” 1st John 5:13

GOD wants His adopted children to be assured, regarding their eternal home. In order to have this confidence we must believe in the name of the Son of GOD.

John wrote in the Gospel of John, John 3:36 “He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”

They could be assured of eternal life and so can we. However, continued belief in the name of the Son of GOD was necessary.

“Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him.” 1st John 5:14-15

Those who believe in the name of the Son of GOD, have a relationship that allows them to talk to GOD and ask things of Him, knowing that He hears. The word confidence is the same word used for boldly in Hebrews 4:16. There, as a result of Jesus the Son of GOD being our great High Priest, the writer says, “…let us therefore come boldly to the throne of Grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” We can take it to Jesus, because He knows and He cares.

As children of GOD, we have assurance that He hears us. Knowing that He hears, we can be confident that we will have what we desired of Him, but only when we ask in harmony with the will of GOD.

Jesus provides the perfect example as He prayed in the garden, “…if it be Thy will take this cup from Me, not My will but Thine be done.”  Matthew 26:36-46

Jesus prayed in harmony with the will of the Father and was heard, because of His godly fear. (Hebrews 5:7) The cup was not taken away, yet He was heard because of the reverence He had for the Father to pray in agreement with His will.

Just as assurance with our salvation requires continued belief, assurance that GOD will hear and grant our request requires praying in harmony with His will.

GOD provides assurance for His children, still, He expects them to meet the conditions that He sets.
