The Blessings of Ignoring Ungodly Advice

“Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly…” Psalm 1:1

Who or what is our guide book for life?  What advice are we receiving and who are we listening to? The Psalmist declares one blessed who does not make choices based on the advice of the ungodly.

The word for ungodly is found 263 times in the KJV O.T. râshâ‛ raw-shaw and it means morally wrong; concretely an (actively) bad person: condemned, guilty, wicked, (wicked man that did wrong.) Strongs

  • “…the wicked will be cut off from the earth, And the unfaithful will be uprooted from it.” Proverbs 2:22
  • “The curse of the LORD is on the house of the wicked, But He blesses the home of the just.” Proverbs 3:33
  • “The way of the wicked is like darkness; They do not know what makes them stumble.” Proverbs 4:19

In these three Proverbs, wicked is the same word the Psalmist uses for ungodly in Psalm 1:1. One is truly blessed when the choice is made to ignore the counsel of the ungodly. The wicked are subject to be cut off from the earth. In their wicked state, the ungodly have the curse of the LORD upon their house. They walk in darkness, unaware of the obstacles that cause them to stumble.

The father warns the son in Proverbs 4:14-15 “Do not enter the path of the wicked, do not walk in the way of evil. Avoid it, do not travel on it; Turn away from it and pass on.”

Blessed, prosperous and happy is the one who chooses to forfeit the advice of the ungodly, opting for a path of righteousness where the LORD is our guide.
