“The LORD is in His holy temple, The LORD’s throne is in heaven; His eyes behold, His eyelids test the sons of men.” Psalm 11:4 (NKJV)
“The LORD has established His throne in heaven, And His kingdom rules over all.” Psalm 103:19 (NKJV)
The idea of a throne signifies dominion. Earthly kings may reign with limited authority; however, the LORD possesses the unique quality of holding supreme power. In contrast to an earthly monarch who rules over a certain territory defined by boundaries and himself is restricted by the flesh, the LORD of Heaven maintains supreme authority over all of creation. His power is endless and unmatched.
In Exodus 1, the king of Egypt, ordered the killing of Hebrew male infants and attempted to destroy Israel by oppression. (Exodus 1:8-22) Still, his best effort could not derail the divine plan of GOD. Moses was providentially spared, being rescued by the King’s daughter, raised among the Egyptians and nursed by His mother. In time, this king dies and another Pharaoh rules in Egypt with great power. At GOD’S command, Moses confronts Pharoah saying, “Thus says the LORD God of Israel: ‘Let My people go, that they may hold a feast to Me in the wilderness. Pharaoh answered, “Who is the LORD, that I should obey His voice to let Israel go? I do not know the LORD, nor will I let Israel go.” Exodus 5:1-2
While Pharoah claimed to be in control, his refusal to obey the voice of God brought plagues upon his people. He was powerless to stop these plagues with any military force or plan he may devise. (Exodus 7:14-12:32) The only successful action he could take, would be to humble himself and surrender to the LORD GOD of Israel. After denying their release multiple times, finally, after the tenth plague on Egypt was completed, Pharoah released Israel. However, shortly thereafter, he changed his mind and chased after them. Israel came to the Red Sea with seemingly nowhere to go. Looking as though return to Egyptian oppression was inevitable, the GOD of heaven parted the waters of the Red Sea and Israel crossed over on dry land. The Egyptian king and his subjects pursued Israel but were covered over and died. (Exodus 14:5-31) The GOD of Heaven provided salvation for His people, while the Egyptian king led his people to their death.
Anytime man’s power is set along side the power of GOD, man’s weakness is exposed and GOD’S unmatched strength shines.
“No wisdom, no understanding, no counsel can avail against the LORD. The horse is made ready for the day of battle, but the victory belongs to the LORD.” Proverbs 21:30-31
