The Warning of Unbelief: Entering God’s Rest

GOD’S promised rest is an eternal one. While this is ultimately realized in heaven, we can begin to experience the peace that comes with that rest here on earth. Ironically, we may experience it the most when things are the most chaotic. Feeling restful during times of unrest can only be a reality when we are looking forward to the promise that remains of entering His rest. The Israelites who were not permitted to enter the promised land of Cannan serve as a warning. GOD wanted them to have it, but they simply did not believe Him.

Those who failed to trust GOD forfeited their inheritance. Deuteronomy 12:9; Joshua 13:7

They had “…an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God…” Hebrews 3:12

They were “…hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.” Hebrews 3:13

“…having heard, (they) rebelled?” Hebrews 3:16

Their unbelief and rebellion were considered sin, provoked GOD’S anger and led to death. Hebrews 3:17

Those who failed to enter His rest were “…those who did not obey…” Hebrews 13:18

“…they could not enter in because of unbelief.” Hebrews 3:19

Failing to enter the physical land was not the greatest consequence Israel faced, rather it was exclusion from the eternal rest that remains for the people of God. This is a serious warning for believers of all generations. The promise of Canaan’s rest was preached to Israel, but many who heard the good news lacked faith. The good news of Christ leads to eternal life if received in faith leading to obedience. Those born again, “…have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end.” Hebrews 3:15 (ESV) We should fear falling short of GOD’S rest because it can happen, but only if we stop trusting and obeying.
