Eternal Treasures: Investing Beyond Earthly Wealth

“Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” (Matthew 6:19-21)

Temporal things are subject to destruction and liable to be taken from us; therefore they possess no security.

Jesus makes us a better offer, by saying “…lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven…”

What makes this option better and more secure?

Treasures laid up in heaven are not predisposed to ruin nor are they liable to be stolen. In other words they have an eternal shelf life. Perishable items in a grocery store have a shelf life, meaning, the items being sold have a limited amount of time in which they are usable or fit for consumption. After their expiration date has passed so has their value.

Treasures laid up on earth have a shelf life. It does not matter what the item or pursuit may be, there is only a limited amount of time that it may offer us something of value or provide us with an advantage. Even if this possession or quest proves to be the source of substantial value in this life, when the expiration date passes, so does its value.

Jesus makes us a better offer; one that allows us to hoard up treasures that have an eternal shelf life.

Where is your treasure? Jesus says, “Where your treasure is there here your heart will be also.” Where is your heart?
