Overcoming Apathy in Your Christian Walk

Apathy is a scary state to be in regarding our Christian life. To be apathetic means we have become indifferent and unconcerned. Things that used to make us zealous for the Lord, have become more of an obligation than a desire. The word “lethargic” has replaced the word “energetic” in describing our walk with GOD.

It takes a lot to be honest with ourselves. We would like to think that we are not the apathetic one; the weak one. We have not compromised, lowered our standards, or lost our zeal. Others? Yes, and they need to fix it, but not me. Perhaps we rationalize where we are. We have excuses and blame others for our spiritual indifference. While we may allow “outside noise” to influence us, my apathy is my fault.

“Whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.” James 4:17

The plans I make, that stay in the file cabinet of good intentions are there because I leave them there. I may get the file folder out every once in a while, look at it, get kind of excited and maybe lay it on the desk or on the kitchen table but fail to follow through and before long it gets put back in the file cabinet. That is my fault.

“In all toil there is profit, but mere talk tends only to poverty.” Proverbs 14:23

To overcome apathy we must return to what we have abandoned. If apathy has crept into our lives, we have distanced ourselves from the Word of GOD. When we distance ourselves from the Word of GOD we stop working for the LORD. The solution is simple; we must get back in the “Word” and get back to work. There is power in the Word of God to change our heart. The Word motivates us to repent and creates a “want to” disposition to do right. It creates excitement to serve God. Return to the Word; restore power.
