The toxic behavior of apathy can slowly build over time. Spiritually, when we stop laboring for the Lord, indifference toward godliness increases. The guaranteed plan of prevention for apathy is to stay busy in the work of the LORD. In other words, if I am spending significant time every day studying God’s word, doing godly things in my life as a result of what his word is teaching me to do, taking advantage of opportunities to assemble with my brothers and sisters in Christ, devoting myself to prayer, loving my wife as I should, being the father to my children that the Bible calls on me to be, trying to live out the Sermon on the Mount qualities that Jesus has revealed to us, and so on, I am certain that apathy will not be a problem for me.
One of the greatest threats to this plan of prevention is fleshly activity that I allow to consume my time. These temporary pursuits take us away from the spiritual nourishment that keeps us diligent and zealous for everlasting life. Jesus reminds us in the Sermon on the Mount, “…where your treasure is there your heart will be also.” Matthew 6:21 When our treasure is earthly our heart grows apathetic for the heavenly.
“Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set His seal on Him.” John 6:27
