2nd Chronicles 11:13-17
King Jeroboam of the Northern ten tribes of Israel, failed to trust GOD, and consequently led many of GOD’S people down a path of destruction. He set up golden calves in Dan and Bethel. Scripture says, “…this thing became a sin, for the people went to worship before the one as far as Dan. He made shrines on the high places, and made priests from every class of people, who were not of the sons of Levi.” (1st Kings 12:30-31)
Jeroboam and his sons prevented the Levites from executing the work of their office to the LORD. 2nd Chronicles 11:14
“…from all their territories the priests and the Levites who were in all Israel took their stand with him (Rehoboam). For the Levites left their common-lands and their possessions and came to Judah and Jerusalem.” 2nd Chronicles 11:13-14
Rather than submitting to the irreverent leadership of Jeroboam, the Levites who dwelt in the territory of the king of Israel were willing to surrender their common-land and possessions to leave the unauthorized environment that Jeroboam had created.
How difficult would it be to leave everything behind and relocate in order that you may remain faithful to GOD?
In addition to the sacrifice they made, their actions influenced others to follow. 2nd Chronicles 11:16 “…and after them out of all the tribes of Israel, such as set their hearts to seek the LORD God of Israel, came to Jerusalem, to sacrifice unto the LORD God of their fathers.
Note that these were not random followers, who were hanging around for selfish gain. The Levites were leaving behind their lands and possessions in order that they may be pleasing to GOD which revealed a certain kind of heart; a heart described in those who followed them. These were individuals who had set their hearts, to seek the LORD GOD of Israel. They had purposed in their hearts to seek the LORD their GOD. Because this was the thing they wanted most, there was nothing that was going to stop them.
Those who wanted a covenant relationship with the LORD left the unauthorized, irreverent environment of microwave religion created by Jeroboam, traveled to Jerusalem, and sacrificed unto the LORD GOD of their fathers.
They were willing to surrender all; are we?
