Sadly, preaching that would cause us to examine our lives and change is increasingly considered as negative and judgmental. Being afraid to say anything that may be controversial for fear of being ostracized has led to compromised Christianity. Desire to remain in good standing with man from those identified as church leaders or proclaimers of the word, leads to messages in which the hearer is unable to distinguish right from wrong. Everyone has a responsibility to study the word of GOD and allow it to shape their heart. However, it is a fact that compromised preaching adversely affects its hearer’s relationship with GOD and humanity.
When being pressed to follow the crowd of prophets assembled by Ahab in 1st Kings 22, the Prophet Micaiah said, “As the LORD lives, whatever the LORD says to me, that I will speak.” 1st Kings 22:14
The messenger sent by Ahab informed Micaiah, the other prophets have all spoken words of encouragement to the king. Let your message agree with their message. Say something good. Micaiah kept if very simple, if the LORD told him to encourage Ahab, he would encourage him. He told him to condemn Ahab; he would condemn him. What ever the LORD said; that is what Micaiah would say.
Ahab said of Micaiah in 1st Kings 22:8, “I hate him, because he does not prophesy good concerning me, but evil.” Micaiah spoke negatively concerning Ahab because it came from GOD, making it absolute truth. Micaiah was saying exactly what Ahab needed to hear, the other prophets were telling him what he wanted to hear. What we need to hear is not always pleasant. Nevertheless, truth is truth and we should always want truth.
